Themes, comments & storylines

Found photographs of unknown children – discarded, lost, lonely, homeless childhood memories. The image just a short moment captured in a life of which we know nothing else. Such photographs evoke a strong sense of absence and displacement. The frame of wool and lace gives warmth and homeliness, like a safety blanket.

"Beautifully soft and textured. I am drawn to the photographs of children, faded, vital yet gone and the worn almost lichen quality of the 'frames' – exquisite."

Exhibition visitor’s comment, Oxford 2006

Photographs, snapshots of arrested moments, always document transitional identities, leaving the person's past and future open to the imagination. People can be placed in particular times and cultures by the textiles that surround them and the clothes they wear. The identies of the photographic subject are revealed as much or even more through the stuff that covers their embodied self than in their faces.
