I bought these stalls at a car boot sale in East Sussex from a woman called Madeleine. Her stall was packed with her wonderfully detailed and intricate knitted creations, which she was selling at incredibly low prices, considering all the time and effort that must have gone into their making. "Why are you selling your work so cheaply?" I asked her. She told me that she just loved knitting these things, but nobody in her family wanted them anymore, so she just sold them, not to make money, but simply to make room for more. In my cabinet of domestic wonders they represent her love of making, and that of many others like her.
