Themes, Comments and Storylines

The synaesthetic experience of storytelling, textures, colours, scents, tastes. Never-ending stories, flights of the imagination, wonder, fantasy, evocation – Thousand-and-one nights, the princess on the pea. Gifts from far away in time and space imbued with what is strange, yet unfolding in the present, gifts for the soul.

Proustian memory, the power of scent.

“Conjure up the wavy aroma of evaporating perfume mingling with beeswax…” (Stafford 2001, p.14)

“When you are searching for hard facts about an item, it’s easy to forget that not knowing allows you the opportunity to imagine.” (Ridout 2007)

“Storytelling, in its sensory aspect, is by no means a job for the voice alone […] That old coordination of the soul, the eye and the hand […] is that of the artisan which we encounter wherever the art of storytelling is at home.” (Benjamin 1999a:107)

“The telling of tales and the making of fabrics are both fundamental human activities, for they both express the desire to marry the ordinary with the fabulous.” (Batt  2000, p.6)

One out of three storyteller's toolboxes: the first one to capture the senses, the second one to knit comfort and curiosity, the third to fasten, snip and unpick.
