Fragilities (fragments)

24cm x 15cm x 13cm

Description

Metal money safe box with broken lock filled with disintegrating fabric fragments.

Themes, comments & storylines

The fragile nature of textiles and selves, the destructive power of time & touch. Touch at your peril. The futility of trying to preserve the past and the inescapability of decay, entropy, fragmentation, death.

The container/safe may be strong yet its content cannot escape deterioration: an allegory to the vulnerability of the economic and banking system?

"The banal fact that material practice revolves around loss more often than preservation - luster fades, things fall apart, we eat soup - receives scant attention or is tidily dismissed."

Colloredo-Mansfeld, Richard, 2003. Matter unbound. Journal of Material Culture, 8 (3), p.246
