Description

A wooden sewing table with disintegrating pink lining. A safety tag made from fabric and felt dangles from the lid. A pair of girl's tap dancing shoes, stitched from white fabric scraps. A musical powder box, with mirror lid, is filled with with small bundles of lace held together on safety pins, each one with a pearly bead.

The objects enclosed in the dark plain box seem faded: not by bright light as is usual with textiles exposed to the sun, but pale and drained like the faces of prisoners in dungeons or children locked up in a cellar deprived of sunshine and colour. What is left is no more than a residue of the fairytale, that might be brought back to life once again when the music box is opened, when we can catch a glimpse of ourselves in its mirrored lid, and the melody chimes the dancing tune of memories.The white shoes are the sister piece to the Red Shoes which tell of a different fate. Both sisters, one with lips red as blood, the other with skin pale like snow, are joined together in Snow-White and Rose-Red.
